South Korea successfully launched indigenous space rocket 'Nuri' for the first time
- On 21 June 2022, South Korea launched its first home-made space rocket 'Nuri' in its second attempt. This space rocket was launched months after the last lift-off, which failed to place a payload into orbit.
- The three-stage 'Nuri rocket' carrying the satellite flew to a target altitude of 700 kilometers (435 mi) after launch, according to South Korea's science ministry. It was launched from South Korea's Space Launch Center located on the South Island.
- Prior to this live television broadcast showed a 47-metre (154-foot) tall rocket with the national flag and its name in the language in Korean rising into the air amid high flames and thick white smoke. The launch made South Korea the 10th country in the world to set up a satellite in space. This was the second launch of South Korea's ‘Nuri rocket’.
- The South Korean’s launch in October last year failed as the rocket's third-stage engine burned down earlier than planned.
- South Korea, the world's 10th largest economy, is a major supplier of semiconductors, automobiles, and Smartphones to the world market. But its space development program lags behind that of its Asian neighbors China, India, and Japan.
- In 2013, South Korea successfully launched a satellite from its soil for the first time, but the first stage of its launch vehicle was built by Russia. South Korea is planning to launch four more ‘Nuri’ rockets in the coming years.
- South Korea is now hoping to send a probe to the Moon, build the next generation of space launch vehicles, and is planning send massive satellites into orbit. South Korean officials said the ‘Nuri’ rocket has no military purpose.
