North Korea begins testing on spy satellites
North Korea conducted another test for surveillance satellite systems a day after regional military agencies confirmed the country's second ballistic missile launch in a week.
The moves come as North Korea has been carrying out a spate of ballistic missile launches – including one detected by its neighbors on Saturday – in what experts call an attempt to add new weapons systems to its arsenal and pressure the United States into making concessions amid stalled diplomacy.
On Sunday, the North’s Korean Central News Agency said it conducted “another important test” the previous day under its plan to develop a reconnaissance satellite. It said authorities tested the satellite’s data transmission and reception system and its ground-based control systems.
Highlights:
- North Korea's National Aerospace Development Administration (NADA) and the Academy of Defense Science launched the satellite to build a reconnaissance satellite.
- It was the ninth missile launch of the year and the second to test satellite technology in a week.
- South Korea, the United States, and Japan all condemned the launch, fearing that North Korea is planning a major nuclear test in the coming months.
- Japan, the United States, and South Korea regard North Korea's satellite launches as thinly veiled ballistic missile technology demonstrations, which UN Security Council resolutions prohibited.
