Bangladesh's longest 'Padma Bridge' inaugurated by PM Sheikh Hasina
- On 25 June 2022, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has inaugurated the long-awaited ‘Padma Bridge’. It is the longest bridge in Bangladesh and is completely built with domestic funds.
- The 6.15-km long road-rail four-lane bridge is built over the Padma River which connects southwestern Bangladesh with the capital and other parts. The multipurpose road-rail bridge, which is fully funded by the Bangladesh government, has been constructed at a cost of $3.6 billion.
- The inauguration of the ‘Padma Bridge’ holds great significance for Bangladesh as the structure is built entirely with domestic financing. With the construction of the bridge, the country has proved the speculations of some financial analysts’ wrong who had doubted whether Bangladesh could raise funds on the basis of domestic resources or not.
- World Bank had pulled the Contribution Out of the Project
- The project was initially expected to be funded by a consortium led by the World Bank. In 2012, it rescinded the proposed credit, saying it had "credible evidence" of corruption among high-level Bangladeshi officials. Bangladesh has always denied these allegations and preferred not to approach the international global lender for funding.
Parameshwaran Iyer to be the new CEO of NITI Aayog
- On 24 June 2022, the Central Government has appointed IAS officer Parameshwaran Iyer as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog. The tenure of current CEO Amitabh Kant will end on 30 June, 2022. His term will be of two years.
- For information, let us tell you that in the year 2016, Amitabh Kant was appointed as the CEO of NITI Aayog. After this his tenure was extended thrice and now it is going to end on 30 June.
- Parameshwaran Iyer was born in Srinagar. He is a 1981 batch IAS officer from Uttar Pradesh. He took voluntary retirement from the Indian Civil Service in the year 2009. After that he started working with the World Bank as a water resource manager. For some time, he has also worked with the UN and provided his services. Let us tell you that recently Suman K Berry was appointed as the Deputy Chairman of NITI Aayog.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launches Vanijya Bhawan and NIRYAT Portal
- Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vanijya Bhawan as well as launched the NIRYAT portal.

- The full form of NIRYAT is 'National Import-Export Record for Yearly Analysis of Trade'. It has been developed as a one-stop platform for stakeholders to get all the necessary information related to India's foreign trade. India exported a total of 670 billion USD (about Rs 50 lakh crore) in the year 2021. Exports play an important role in the progress of any country.
- Vanijya Bhawan
- Vanijya Bhawan is the new campus of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Constructed near India Gate, the Vanijya Bhawan will be used by two departments under the ministry, namely, the Department of Commerce and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
