What to do in the event of a nuclear attack: New York City details the steps to take
New York City has launched a new awareness campaign with a new PSA telling the public what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. The NYC Department of Emergency Management posted a video on Monday that outlines the three main safety steps:
1: GET INSIDE - Get inside a building as fast as possible, and move away from the windows.
2: STAY INSIDE - Shut the doors and windows and go to the middle of the building; remove clothing and bag it in case of radioactive dust or ash; and get clean immediately, showering with soap or shampoo. If you have a basement, go there.
3: Stay tuned- Follow media for more information. Don't forget to sign up for Notify NYC. And, don't go outside until officials say it is safe.
"Ironically, the notion of protecting yourself from fallout is more relevant now than it was at the peak of the fallout shelter program," said Jeff Schlegelmilch, National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia Climate School.
"New York City Emergency Management has a multitude of free resources for New Yorkers to prepare for emergencies, including no-notice events," said New York City Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol. "As the threat landscape continues to evolve, it is important that New Yorkers know we are preparing for any imminent threats and are providing them with the resources they need to stay safe and informed."
“While the likelihood of a nuclear weapon incident occurring in/near New York City is very low, it is important New Yorkers know the steps to stay safe,” the NYC Emergency Management Department said in a press release.
