White House response plan for information on infectious COVID types

The nation's top health officials announced Wednesday that COVID-19 booster shots are set to be available to all American adults starting next month.

Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy said at the White House briefing. "It is now our clinical judgment that it is time to draw up a plan for a COVID booster. “he added "We know that even highly effective vaccines become less effective over time,"

"This includes our most vulnerable populations, such as our health care providers, nursing home residents and other seniors. We will begin giving booster shots directly to residents of long-term care facilities," he said.

People who received the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines will be eligible before Johnson & Johnson recipients

People 18 years and older who received the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines will be eligible for a booster dose eight months after their second dose, officials said.

The booster plan would go into effect starting the week of Sept. 20.

People who got the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine would also likely need an additional shot to prolong its effectiveness against coronavirus infection and to reduce the severity of COVID-19 symptoms, health officials said. However, they are still conducting research and not yet released plans for booster shots for people who received that type of vaccine.
